Integrated delivery networks (IDNs), also called as health systems, are complex organizations. As pharma sales teams evolve to an account-based model, understanding levers of influence within these complex organizations is important. In a previous blog piece we analyzed how commercial teams can segment and understand these entities much better, using insights derived from data science and real-world claims.
To visualize the complexity of an IDN, we have built a tool that maps Mayo Clinic Health System in all it’s detail. We recommend viewing this dashboard in full screen (by selecting the option at the bottom right of the dashbaord).
Ownership structure for hospitals and other healthcare facilities under Mayo Clinic
The IDN used in this example has almost 4 layers of hierarchy from the parent to the child hospital. An IDN has many other healthcare organizations (HCOs) besides hospitals, along with affiliated healthcare professionals (HCPs). It is easy to imagine the complexity of the organizational structure when all HCOs and HCPs are included, not just hospitals.
Our analysis shows that this structure is also highly dependent on the disease area, i.e. an affiliation structure for oncology will look very different from one for cardiology, for instance. Hence any healthcare data intelligence solution that profiles HCPs and HCOs should be able to segment and map affiliations based on therapeutic area, geographical focus or size.
